Darwin's tortoise passes on

I'm sad to report that Harriet, believed to have been one of three tortoises taken from the Galapagos Islands by Darwin on his historic 1835 voyage aboard HMS Beagle, has died at the ripe old age of 176.

I love when newspaper writers are instructed by their editors to explain things, but feel really stupid explaining them, and thus come up with very amusing explanations.

A less roundabout way of showing what I mean, from an article in the LA Times about the owner of one of the Cheesesteak Giants of Philly posting sign declaring that people ordering from his shop should speak only English:

For the uninitiated, a cheesesteak is a cholesterol-delivery device consisting of grilled strips of beef, melted cheese, onions and peppers on an Italian roll.

I don't think I've ever seen a more accurate description of the pure, artery-clogging joy that is the Philly Cheesesteak than calling it a "cholesterol-delivery device."
